Bees and Wasps

Bees and wasps are one of the most common hazards that you might encounter while geocaching. You can find these in the city or country. Care needs to be taken both when hiding and hunting geocaches. You might think that you just found a nifty little hiding place for a new cache, but if it is in winter when bees and wasps are dormant, spring and summer might bring a surprise to your new cache!

When hunting a cache, think before you stick your hand where a wasp nest might be. Some people carry a small mirror with them to look places without having to reach their hand in. You might try lightly tapping with a stick where you think the cache might be to see if anything flies out. However this can result in stings too, so be careful! It might be better to look for another cache.

Bees and wasps are not active at night, so hunting after dark might be a little more safe. But if you stick you hand in that guard rail and grab a fistful of wasp nest don't think they can't still sting!

A good thing to carry with you when out geocaching is activated charcoal. This comes in tablets or powder, and can be obtained from most any health food store. It is one of the best ways to reduce or eliminate the poisons from a variety of ailments. The tablets can be ingested, and the powder can be mixed with water and drunk. You can also mix the powder with a small amount of water to make a poultice to apply on the affected area. If you use charcoal, you should still seek medical help from a doctor as soon as possible.
